Course Outline

The first three weeks of the course are classes introducing and preparing for the teaching practice. Topics covered will include lesson planning, classroom management, assessment of learner needs as well as an overview of practical aspects of the course, such as assessment of teaching practice and coursework.

From weeks 4 – 19, most of the classes will consist of teaching practice. The nine students are split into three groups of three, and only the three students teaching each week need to attend the teaching practice session.

Each teaching practice session in this period consists of 3 students teaching for 30 minutes each plus 90 minutes of feedback discussion, making a total of 3 hours for each class.
The teaching practice sessions in this period are punctuated by classes (weeks 7, 11, 15 & 19) in which feedback will be given on lessons taught and where there will be guidance regarding lessons to be taught subsequently.

In weeks 20 – 25, the final one-hour lessons will be taught. These represent the culmination of your three years of study and allow you to put into practice the theoretical insights and practical skills that you will have acquired over that period.

Each teaching practice session in weeks 20, 22 & 24 consists of 3 students teaching for 60 minutes each. In the feedback sessions in weeks 21, 23 & 25, just the three students who taught the previous week attend to receive individual feedback on their lessons and guidance on completing the work on their portfolio.

Depending on the course dates, there may be one or more classes at the end of the course which will be used for the whole group to reflect on the development of your teaching over the year and complete the work on your portfolio.
